Is bacteriostatic water the same as sterile water?

No. Both are water for injection-grade, but bacteriostatic water contains a preservative (typically 0.9% benzyl alcohol) that allows multiple draws from the same vial over time. Sterile water contains no preservative and is intended for single use.

How long does an opened vial of bacteriostatic water last?

Can bacteriostatic water be refrigerated?

It's generally stored at controlled room temperature rather than refrigerated, away from direct light. Refrigeration isn't required for the water itself, though a specific reconstituted compound may have its own storage requirements.

What percentage of benzyl alcohol is in bacteriostatic water?

Typically 0.9%, which is the standard concentration used as an antimicrobial preservative in multi-use vials.

What's the difference between USP grade and lab grade?

USP grade means the product meets a specific, published purity and testing standard. "Lab grade" is a looser, non-standardized term that can vary between suppliers.

How many times can you draw from a bacteriostatic water vial?

There's no fixed draw limit, but each draw should use a fresh sterile needle or transfer tool and a newly disinfected septum, within the vial's overall discard window (typically 28 days from first puncture).

What alcohol percentage is best for prep pads?

70% isopropyl alcohol is the standard concentration for disinfection β€” higher concentrations evaporate too quickly to be as effective.

Can you use a regular wipe instead of an alcohol prep pad?

Not interchangeably. A standard sterile wipe may not contain alcohol at all, or may be sized for surface cleaning rather than septum prep. For vial septums, use an individually wrapped 70% isopropyl alcohol prep pad.

Why do you swirl a vial instead of shaking it?

Shaking introduces air and can damage the structure of some lyophilized compounds during reconstitution. Gentle swirling is sufficient to return most compounds to solution.

What does 'lyophilized' mean?

It refers to a compound that has been freeze-dried into a powder form for stability and storage, and requires reconstitution with a diluent (such as bacteriostatic or sterile water) before use in solution.

Do transfer syringes come in different gauges?

Yes β€” gauge refers to the needle's diameter, with common laboratory transfer options including 31G and 23G. Finer gauges (higher numbers) are generally used for smaller-volume, more precise transfers.

What does 'luer lock' mean on a syringe?

A luer lock is a threaded fitting that screws the needle securely onto the syringe barrel, reducing the chance of separation during use compared to a plain slip-tip fitting.

Is bacteriostatic water the same as saline?

No. Saline is a salt solution, while bacteriostatic water is purified water with a preservative added. They're used differently and aren't interchangeable.

What causes cloudiness in a reconstituted vial?

Cloudiness can indicate contamination, improper mixing, or compound degradation. Any visible cloudiness or particulate matter is a reason to discard the vial regardless of how long it's been since reconstitution.

How do you calculate concentration after reconstitution?

Divide the total amount of compound in the vial by the total volume of diluent added. For example, 10 mg reconstituted with 2 mL of diluent yields a concentration of 5 mg/mL.
