Bacteriostatic water shelf life: storage and discard timelines
Bacteriostatic water is water for injection-grade water with a small amount of benzyl alcohol added β typically around 0.9% β as a preservative. That preservative is what distinguishes it from plain sterile water, and it's also what defines its usable shelf life once a vial has been opened.
Why an open vial doesn't last indefinitely
Unopened, a sealed vial of bacteriostatic water is stable for the manufacturer's stated shelf life, usually printed on the label. Once the septum has been punctured, though, the clock changes. The benzyl alcohol preservative inhibits bacterial growth for repeated draws from the same vial, but its protective effect diminishes over time and with repeated punctures. That's why most manufacturer and laboratory guidance sets a discard window of 28 days after first use, regardless of how much of the original stated shelf life remains.
What shortens that window further
A few handling factors can shorten the effective usable life of an opened vial well below 28 days:
- Storage temperature. Bacteriostatic water should be kept at controlled room temperature, out of direct light. Repeated temperature swings or storage near heat sources can degrade the preservative faster than the label timeline assumes.
- Septum integrity. Each puncture through the rubber septum is a potential entry point for contamination. Using a new, sterile needle or transfer tool for every draw β and never reusing one that has touched another surface β matters more than the discard date itself.
- Cloudiness or particulates. Any visible change in clarity is a reason to discard a vial immediately, independent of how many days it's been open.
Storage best practices
For laboratory use, keep vials upright, at room temperature, away from direct sunlight, and wipe the septum with a fresh alcohol prep pad before every draw. Label each vial with the date it was first punctured so the 28-day window is easy to track at a glance.
