What is benzyl alcohol, and why is it used as a preservative?

Benzyl alcohol is an aromatic alcohol compound that, at low concentrations, has antimicrobial properties β€” meaning it inhibits the growth of bacteria without fully sterilizing a solution outright. That's the specific property that makes it useful in multi-use laboratory vials.

Why it's added at 0.9%

0.9% is the concentration commonly used in bacteriostatic water because it's high enough to meaningfully inhibit bacterial growth across repeated vial punctures, while remaining a low enough concentration to avoid significantly altering the water's other properties for laboratory use.

Bacteriostatic vs. bactericidal

It's worth distinguishing these two terms. A bactericidal agent kills bacteria outright. A bacteriostatic agent β€” which is what benzyl alcohol functions as at this concentration β€” inhibits bacterial reproduction and growth without necessarily killing existing organisms. This is why bacteriostatic water is described as extending safe usability across multiple draws, rather than fully sterilizing the vial with each use.

Why it matters for vial choice
