USP grade vs. lab grade water: what the labels actually mean

Grading terminology on water and reagent labels is inconsistent across suppliers, which makes it easy to assume two products are equivalent when they aren't.

USP grade

USP (United States Pharmacopeia) grade refers to water that meets the purity, testing, and manufacturing standards published in the USP monograph for Water for Injection or similar categories. This is a defined, testable standard β€” a USP-grade product has been manufactured and tested against specific published criteria for particulate matter, endotoxin levels, and chemical purity.

"Lab grade"

"Lab grade" is a much looser, non-standardized term. It generally signals a level of purity suitable for general laboratory work, but unlike USP grade, there's no single published standard that "lab grade" must meet β€” different suppliers can use the term to describe products of varying purity. When a specific purity threshold matters for your work, look for the actual percentage or standard cited (e.g., "99% purity, USP-grade") rather than relying on the grade label alone.

What to check on a label

For laboratory reconstitution work, look for: a stated purity percentage, the specific standard referenced (USP, ACS, etc.), and any preservative content and concentration. These specifics tell you more than a grade name alone.
