Luer lock vs. slip tip syringes: what's the difference?

The fitting where a needle or transfer tip attaches to a syringe barrel comes in two common styles, and the difference affects how securely the two pieces stay connected during use.

Luer lock

A luer lock fitting uses a threaded collar that screws the needle or tip onto the syringe barrel. This creates a more secure connection that resists separation under pressure, which is useful for transfers involving thicker liquids or higher dispensing pressure.

Slip tip

A slip tip (or "luer slip") fitting simply pushes on and holds by friction, without threading. It's quicker to attach and detach, which suits fast, low-pressure, general liquid dispensing tasks where a secure locking connection isn't essential.

Which to choose for general lab and industrial use

For higher-precision or higher-pressure dispensing work, luer lock is the more reliable choice. For quick, general-purpose liquid transfer and measuring tasks, slip tip syringes are simpler and faster to work with, at the tradeoff of a less secure fitting.
