Choosing the right syringe gauge for laboratory liquid transfer
Gauge refers to the diameter of a needle or transfer tip β and counterintuitively, a higher gauge number means a smaller diameter, not a larger one.
Finer gauges (higher numbers)
A finer gauge, such as 31G, has a smaller internal diameter. This slows flow rate and is better suited to smaller-volume, more precise liquid transfers where control matters more than speed.
Thicker gauges (lower numbers)
A thicker gauge, such as 23G, has a larger internal diameter, allowing faster flow. This suits general-purpose liquid dispensing and transfer tasks where speed is more useful than fine control, or where a liquid's viscosity requires a wider path.
Matching gauge to task
For small, precise transfers (measuring out small liquid volumes), a finer gauge like 31G is generally the better fit. For general dispensing, measuring, or transferring larger volumes, a thicker gauge like 23G moves liquid faster and handles a wider range of viscosities.
